The Melville Cat: I’m Missing

by | Nov 13, 2015 | The Melville/Brixton Cats | 30 comments

From the Melville Cat:

Well, this is awkward. It seems that I am missing.

I, of course, know exactly where I am. But Heather and Ray do not. I realize this doesn’t make much sense. But there you have it.

Smokey-upside-downHave you seen me?

I am my own cat. Heather does her best to control my movements but she has always known that her efforts are ultimately futile. I go where I want, when I want. This is, after all, how I came to live with Heather in the first place.

At any rate, I cannot tell you where I am myself because that is how I roll. But Heather and Ray are worried about me — they haven’t seen me in more than a week. So if you’ve seen me or have some idea of where I am, maybe you could let Heather know by leaving a comment on this blog or messaging @2summers on Twitter or Instagram.

From Heather:

Smokey is making light of the situation. But the truth is that we are really worried about him. We live on 6th Avenue in Melville, toward the end of the street near Main Road. If you’ve seen an all-gray cat anywhere in that area lately, please let me know, and spread the word to others who live in the area. Smokey is micro-chipped but he refuses to wear a collar.

Smokey, if you’ve decided to relocate, that’s fine. I totally understand and I’ve always known that this is your way. I just want to make sure you’re alright.

UPDATE: The Melville Cat was found.

Oh no, Heather! I’m so sorry… I hope Smokey comes home soon and that, if he doesn’t, he’s found a nice place to stay. – tekla

I’ve checked with Michelle, his old owner who lives next to my old house. He hasn’t been seen there but I still need to check with Lucky and Horst.

No sign? Could he have gone back to the old ‘hood?

Clearly he found someone who adores him and spoils him with meat and they have locked him up.

          • 2summers

            I really, really hope so.

Thanks Adam. I haven’t checked all these places yet but he does gave a microchip. I’m hoping that if he winds up at a vet or shelter someone will check for that.

Aww, I’m always terrified that my own grey cat will disappear one day and I won’t be able to find him. I hope Smokey shows up soon, or at least lets you know he’s okay.

Any news? I hope he turns up. My dog used to run off all the time, mostly after squirrels or rabbits or whatever took his fancy mostly zooming straight through our neighbor’s yards. I was usually there when it happened (he wasn’t allowed outside without supervision since our yard had no fence) and would run right after him and snatch him.

However cats like to wander and are so unpredictable. I hope you find him, he seems like a lovely (if stubborn) kitty.

Thanks Amelie. Yep, cats are definitely harder to control than dogs in this regard. Especially in South Africa, where it’s virtually impossible to keep cats inside because houses tend to be really open. Thanks for the hopeful thoughts 🙂

Very sad to hear… Stay hopeful, but also prepare for the worst and then celebrate the good years he had and joy he brought to so many of us. How old is he.. more or less?

Thanks Anriette, that really helps. He’s about 8 I think.
