by 2summers | Apr 12, 2021 | #10SouthAfricanTowns, Eastern Cape, Food and Drink, Lodging, Museums and Buildings, The Blogitects

Last year, before the pandemic, I started a campaign called #10SouthAfricanTowns. I planned to visit ten small towns all over South Africa during 2020. Bathurst, 20 kilometers inland from Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, was one of the first towns I put on the list....

Kaapsehoop is the (long belated) third stop in my #10SouthAfricanTowns project, for which I’m visiting ten small towns across South Africa. Read about my first stop in Val and my second stop in Kameel. In September 2019, when I was first conceiving the idea for my...

I don’t normally write year-end wrap-up posts. I’m usually long asleep by midnight on 31 December. I don’t make New Years resolutions or assign much importance to the end of a calendar year. But this isn’t just the end of a year —...

by 2summers | Dec 6, 2019 | #10SouthAfricanTowns

A couple of months ago I announced my plan to visit 10 small South African towns in 2020, in celebration of the ten-year anniversary of my blog. I will blog about my visits to the 10 South African towns throughout the year (along with my usual Joburg-centric content),...

Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horse Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horses, which originally came here with the German military during World War I. Today we visited a hide/viewing point near the horses’ watering hole and I was lucky enough to have an experienced host, Andrew Engelbrecht, who owns a farm in Aus and knows how to approach the horses. Do not try this at home! #wildhorses
I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tr I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tree for about ten years, ever since I saw one from a distance in the Northern Cape and didn’t have time to stop. Yesterday I got to see (and photograph) about 100 of them, in what is possibly the most beautiful and dramatic landscape I’ve ever experienced.
