A Tour of Joburg’s Mediterranean East

by 2summers | Aug 19, 2022 | Ekurhuleni (East Rand), Food and Drink, Johannesburg

During my Rosebank jacaranda tour last October, I held a contest: The first participant to spot the lone white jacaranda tree on our route could choose a new place in Joburg for me to visit and blog about. It took a while for the winner, Caroline Talotta, to cash in...

by 2summers | May 4, 2022 | Ekurhuleni (East Rand), Johannesburg, Museums and Buildings, Religion

Several months ago I spotted a post in the @WhatsOnInJoburg Instagram feed. “Africa’s tallest Shiva Shakti Statue is in Benoni”, the post read, with a photo of the biggest, boldest, most colorful Hindu deity I’ve ever seen. I made a mental note...

by 2summers | Aug 10, 2021 | Ekurhuleni (East Rand), Food and Drink, Johannesburg

Twelfth in an occasional series about my favorite coffee shops in Joburg.  I’d nearly forgotten about the chilly day, more than two months ago, when Gail and I had a spontaneous coffee and lunch at Red Door Café in Edenvale. We had just gone shopping for...

Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab sand dunes near Aus, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, at sunrise. Unlike Sossusvlei, a few hours to the north, these dunes are not a frequently visited tourist attraction (I couldn’t even find an Instagram location.) I think we were the only humans within a 30-kilometer radius. It was worth the early wake-up. #namibia
Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horse Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horses, which originally came here with the German military during World War I. Today we visited a hide/viewing point near the horses’ watering hole and I was lucky enough to have an experienced host, Andrew Engelbrecht, who owns a farm in Aus and knows how to approach the horses. Do not try this at home! #wildhorses
I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tr I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tree for about ten years, ever since I saw one from a distance in the Northern Cape and didn’t have time to stop. Yesterday I got to see (and photograph) about 100 of them, in what is possibly the most beautiful and dramatic landscape I’ve ever experienced.
