St. Alban’s: A Hidden Cathedral in Ferreirasdorp

St. Alban’s: A Hidden Cathedral in Ferreirasdorp

by 2summers | Mar 22, 2023 | Arts and Culture, Hidden Joburg, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Museums and Buildings

This post is not part of my Hidden Joburg series, which I started last year (and will eventually return to). But it should be. St. Alban’s Anglican Mission Church in Ferreirasdorp would have been a perfect addition to the Hidden Joburg book and I don’t...

My quest to visit all of the places featured in the Hidden Johannesburg book continues. With my recent trip to the Freemasons’ Hall, which I’m about to tell you about, I have now visited 20 of the 28 places in the book. This will be my final Hidden Joburg...

by 2summers | Oct 14, 2022 | Food and Drink, Hidden Joburg, Johannesburg, Museums and Buildings

The Radium Beer Hall, known as “Joburg’s oldest running bar” — there are older bars, but none of them have remained open continuously for as long as the Radium — is not a new destination for me. I’ve been there several times over...
Hidden Joburg: The View in Parktown

Hidden Joburg: The View in Parktown

by 2summers | Oct 1, 2022 | Arts and Culture, Hidden Joburg, Johannesburg, Museums and Buildings, Tours

As most of you know, I’m on a quest to visit all the places featured in the Hidden Johannesburg book. Last week I went to the View, a historic Victorian mansion in Parktown, as part of a tour with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation. This brings my total number...

Hidden Joburg: Glenshiel and Villa Arcadia

by 2summers | Sep 13, 2022 | Hidden Joburg, Johannesburg, Museums and Buildings, Tours

My quest to visit all the places in the Hidden Johannesburg book — which began with my pilgrimage to the Lemon Squeezer Church and then a visit to the Lions Shul — continues. I recently went to Glenshiel, a historic mansion designed by renowned architect...

The over-the-top insane interiors of Marble House, The over-the-top insane interiors of Marble House, a Vanderbilt holiday home in Newport, Rhode Island. From the outside it looks just like the White House. I am back in Joburg and experiencing the slowest jet lag recovery of all time but I’ll hopefully have a blog post up about my trip to Rhode Island in the next day or two. #rhodeisland

I somehow never knew until yesterday that Frederic I somehow never knew until yesterday that Frederick County, right next to Carroll County (where I’m from), has three historic covered bridges. One of them, the Utica Mills Bridge, was originally built around 1843, but got partially destroyed in a flood and moved/rebuilt in its current location around 1891. The bridge didn’t look very exciting on its own so @tenneymason and I staged a photoshoot with Dad’s Jeep, Hella Yella. #maryland #coveredbridge
