Braamfontein From Above

Braamfontein From Above

by 2summers | Mar 12, 2021 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Museums and Buildings

On Tuesday evening, South Point properties invited me to check out 56 Jorissen Street, a brand-new, high-rise student residence in Braamfontein. The whole building is beautiful — I almost wished I could become an 18-year-old college student again and move in....

MiniMark Wholesale Discount House: Fabric Heaven on Diagonal Street

by 2summers | Feb 18, 2021 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Markets/Shopping

I recently went with my friends Manuela and Gail to Diagonal Street, a historic Joburg shopping street. Diagonal Street — known for its fabric, blanket, and muti (traditional medicine) shops — is so named because it runs on a diagonal for three blocks...
Walking Downtown Joburg With Gerald

Walking Downtown Joburg With Gerald

by 2summers | Dec 3, 2020 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Museums and Buildings

I recently spent a Friday walking around downtown Joburg with Gerald Garner. Gerald needed a few photos taken for his new book, Johannesburg 2020 and Ahead. So we walked the city from end to end — nearly nine kilometers total, with a couple of Uber rides mixed...

An Organic, Vegan Exploration of Joburg

by 2summers | Nov 19, 2020 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Tours

Last weekend I was invited to attend Honest Travel’s inaugural “Organic Vegan Experience” tour in downtown Joburg. We met in the afternoon at the Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow and meandered around town until nightfall, visiting various urban gardens...

Yummy Mayfair: An American Junk Food Bonanza

by 2summers | Nov 13, 2020 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Markets/Shopping

Earlier this week my American friend Ryan tipped me off to a shop called Yummy, in Mayfair, which sells a quirky selection of imported American junk food. I googled the place and knew immediately that I had to make a pilgrimage. Ryan and I went to Yummy yesterday. The...

Farming With Mama Fifi: Bertrams Inner City Farm

by 2summers | Sep 2, 2020 | Food and Drink, Hillbrow/Yeoville, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre

Last week, when I published a post about my cycling tour with Honest Travel, I mentioned our visit to the Bertrams Inner City Farm. I decided that visit was far too brief to give the farm proper justice in my blog. So I went back again yesterday. Walking the Bertrams...

I hadn’t been to the Klipriviersberg Nature Rese I hadn’t been to the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve in many years — more than a decade, in fact — and had forgotten how vast and wild it is. We almost turned around and left when we saw the overflowing parking lot but once inside it was not nearly as crowded as we’d feared. Most of the time it felt as empty as this photo. We walked more than 10k and I’m exhausted now. Highly recommended, only 20 minutes from central Joburg, and it’s free! Also there’s a nice cafe at the Kibler Park entrance. #discoverjoburg

I have so many photos from our wild road trip and I have so many photos from our wild road trip and so many blog posts to write - it’s quite overwhelming. Here’s a shot I meant to share more than a week ago, of a crazy pink church in a tiny Eastern Cape Town called Hofmeyr. I can’t remember the name of the lady in the picture. #blogitectroadtrip
