Andrew Lindsay, Joburg’s Mosaic Master

by 2summers | Jun 13, 2022 | Arts and Culture, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Tours

I recently participated in a public art bus tour hosted by the City of Johannesburg, honoring the legacy of Andrew (Drew) Lindsay. Drew died of a heart attack in October 2021 while sitting in his garden outside the Spaza Art Gallery in Troyeville. He was 65. If...

Return to Jeppestown’s City Hall

by 2summers | Apr 13, 2022 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Markets/Shopping, Museums and Buildings

Almost ten years ago, I did an exhibition of photos I shot in Maboneng and Jeppestown, two adjacent neighborhoods in downtown Joburg. I had nearly forgotten about this exhibition (which you can read about here). But then a week ago I received an Instagram message from...

Shopping Sustainably (and Cheaply) in Johannesburg

by 2summers | Mar 29, 2022 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Markets/Shopping

You all know I’ve become obsessed with second-hand shopping — especially thrifted clothes curated by my friend Ryan of @threedogsthrift. And while I buy most of my clothes directly from Ryan, I’ve also become interested in sustainable shopping more...

by 2summers | Feb 15, 2022 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Markets/Shopping

I recently moved to a new house, and for the first time in nearly half a century of life I’ve become interested in plants. Actually that’s an understatement: I’ve become obsessed with plants. Most of my plants have names. I spend lots of time...

Syrian Rose: The Best Restaurant in Fordsburg

by 2summers | Nov 16, 2021 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre

I’m taking a quick break from my Western Cape road trip series to tell you about Syrian Rose, my new favorite restaurant in Fordsburg. Syrian Rose is unquestionably the best place in the entire city to chow down on spicy grilled chicken, shawarmas, and fresh...

Photo Post: Joburg Graffiti Bonanza

by 2summers | Oct 15, 2021 | Arts and Culture, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Tours

Last weekend I did something I used to do all the time but haven’t done for ages: An art and graffiti walk through downtown Joburg. The walk was hosted by Goethe-Institut Südafrika and a group of Joburg graffiti artists, led by Dr. Foodz. Dr. Foodz explains a...

Yesterday I visited @tweakfashion, an NPO in Modde Yesterday I visited @tweakfashion, an NPO in Modderfontein that takes second-hand clothes and discarded fabrics and upcycles them into new clothing, toys, and other gifts. It’s an all-woman operation and most of the women working there did not know how to sew when the first started at Tweak last year. It’s a really special space, in a complex of neat, red brick buildings that once served as dormitories for the dynamite factory workers in Modderfontein.

Thanks Justine, Dee, Helen, Grace, Rosa, Jenny, and Zinhle for showing me your workshop and telling me about what you do. I’m sure I’ll be back! #discoverjoburg
