Joburg Airports: O.R. Tambo vs. Lanseria

Joburg Airports: O.R. Tambo vs. Lanseria

by 2summers | Jan 11, 2018 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg Transportation

Travelstart asked me to write a blog post about the cheap domestic flights it offers in South Africa. Of course I agreed — blogging assignments are easy when the thing you’re asked to blog about is actually useful. And every traveler in South Africa knows...
Four Tips on Car Hire in South Africa

Four Tips on Car Hire in South Africa

by 2summers | Nov 30, 2016 | Joburg Weekend Getaways, Johannesburg Transportation

When I moved from America to South Africa, cars were the most difficult adjustment. Everything about cars and driving is different here: Cars drive on the opposite side of the road, car parts have different names (windshield vs. windscreen, horn vs. hooter, trunk vs....

(Re)discovering Joburg

by 2summers | Apr 28, 2014 | Hillbrow/Yeoville, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Johannesburg Transportation, Tours

This weekend I participated in a city immersion adventure in Joburg, tentatively named “Jozi, the Amazing Place”. Eight people spent 48 hours in downtown Joburg, traveling around on public transport and accomplishing various “missions” assigned...
Johannesburg’s Amazing Race

Johannesburg’s Amazing Race

by 2summers | Mar 6, 2014 | Instagram, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Johannesburg Transportation, Townships/Informal Settlements

I have a confession to make: I know a lot about Joburg, but I know nothing about Joburg’s public transportation system. Give me a car and a set of directions, and I’m off. I’ll get lost a few times, but I can find anything in this city by car. Take...

An Authentic Joburg Afternoon

by 2summers | Sep 3, 2013 | Arts and Culture, Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Johannesburg Transportation, Music/Festivals

I recently had a Twitter argument with a guy who said he thinks Joburg “lacks authenticity”. I never got to the root of what he meant (Twitter isn’t the place for complex debate), but I’m glad the argument happened because it got me thinking...

Insider Tips for the Joburg City Festival

by 2summers | Aug 16, 2013 | Arts and Culture, Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Johannesburg Transportation, Music/Festivals

I love downtown Joburg. Everyone knows this. I am constantly singing the inner city’s praises and defending it against detractors. I visit the inner city as often as possible and I love discovering fun things to do there. Downtown Jozi at its best, viewed at...

Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horse Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horses, which originally came here with the German military during World War I. Today we visited a hide/viewing point near the horses’ watering hole and I was lucky enough to have an experienced host, Andrew Engelbrecht, who owns a farm in Aus and knows how to approach the horses. Do not try this at home! #wildhorses
I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tr I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tree for about ten years, ever since I saw one from a distance in the Northern Cape and didn’t have time to stop. Yesterday I got to see (and photograph) about 100 of them, in what is possibly the most beautiful and dramatic landscape I’ve ever experienced.
