How to Climb Table Mountain via Skeleton Gorge

How to Climb Table Mountain via Skeleton Gorge

by 2summers | Mar 9, 2022 | Cape Town, Parks/Nature Reserves, The Blogitects, Western Cape

I visited Cape Town for the first time more than 11 years ago, with my mother. During that trip, Mom and I attempted to climb Table Mountain in a hilariously foolish way — I’ll let you read about it yourself in the blog post I wrote back then, called How...

The Glorious Proteas of Kloofendal Nature Reserve

by 2summers | Feb 22, 2022 | Johannesburg, Parks/Nature Reserves, The Blogitects, West Rand

Last Sunday Thorsten and I went hiking in the Kloofendal Nature Reserve, which is in Roodepoort on Johannesburg’s West Rand. I last hiked in Kloofendal nearly 11 years ago; I know I enjoyed it because I wrote a blog post back then, too. But Kloofendal is even...

Cruising Along the Eastern Cape’s Route 72

by 2summers | May 12, 2021 | Eastern Cape, The Blogitects

There’s a beautiful stretch of coastline in the Eastern Cape, about halfway between Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and East London. Sometimes referred to as “the Sunshine Coast”, this area stretches along Route 72 and includes several small and...

The Blogitects Spend a Night in Wild Wepener

by 2summers | Apr 26, 2021 | Free State, Lodging, The Blogitects

I waited until the last minute before deciding where to stay on the last night of the Blogitect Road Trip. The first eight nights of the trip were meticulously planned, but I delayed choosing a stopover town for the ninth night. I wanted to find an unusual town...
Pilgrimage to the Big Pineapple

Pilgrimage to the Big Pineapple

by 2summers | Apr 16, 2021 | Eastern Cape, Museums and Buildings, The Blogitects

I’m not sure when I first saw a photo of the Big Pineapple. It might have been in a blog post, or maybe somewhere on Instagram. But I do know one thing for certain: The moment I saw the Big Pineapple, it rocketed to the top of my South African must-see list. I...

A Visitor’s Guide to Bathurst

by 2summers | Apr 12, 2021 | #10SouthAfricanTowns, Eastern Cape, Food and Drink, Lodging, Museums and Buildings, The Blogitects

Last year, before the pandemic, I started a campaign called #10SouthAfricanTowns. I planned to visit ten small towns all over South Africa during 2020. Bathurst, 20 kilometers inland from Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, was one of the first towns I put on the list....

We are having the craziest journey through South A We are having the craziest journey through South Africa right now and at this point there’s no telling when we’ll get back to Joburg. Luckily we landed up close to one of the best curry restaurants in South Africa, KNK Curries on the Richard’s Bay harbour. Thanks @eenblondtours for the recommendation and thanks Fortunate, Mbali, and the rest of the staff at KNK for making our day. We ordered a mutton curry bunny chow and the mutton curry and rice - it was tasty and hot but not overpowering. #🌶 #2summerseats

Artist @simonemariefarah in her studio at Victoria Artist @simonemariefarah in her studio at Victoria Yards. I love all the blues. We visited Simone and a couple of other artists for the media launch of @openstudiosjoburg, which is coming up the weekend after next. A whole bunch of Joburg artist studios are participating and there will be buses running between them. I’m so excited for this event! It’s free but you have to register online - check out the Open Studios site for information. #discoverjoburg @meta.foundation @johannesburginyourpocket
I finally made it to the ‘Lemon Squeezer Church’ in Victory Park, which is featured in the Hidden Joburg book. It’s such a spectacular church! Thanks again for hosting us, @itslucysarah. Read about it in my blog (link in profile) and check out some great sketches of St. Charles Borromeo on @thethinking_hand. #hiddenjoburg #discoverjoburg
Today I went to see Mama Fifi at @bertrams_farmacy Today I went to see Mama Fifi at @bertrams_farmacy for the first time in a while. What a delight! If you’re interested in visiting Mama Fifi’s urban farm, you can do so on a tour with @honesttravelexperience_za or @joburgplaces. You can also just contact the farm and go - it’s basically across the road from Ellis Park. #discoverjoburg
I think I’ve finally finished my ‘best shawarm I think I’ve finally finished my ‘best shawarmas in Joburg’ research. Which is good because I’m really, really full. Blog post coming later this week. 📸 by @thethinking_hand at @yalla_laffa in Morningside. #discoverjoburg #2summerseats

Yesterday I busted out of my comfort zone and atte Yesterday I busted out of my comfort zone and attended a ‘melodic house music’ event called @ethernessfest, on a secret downtown rooftop that turned out to be the Franklin Building at 4 Pritchard Street. What an incredible space! The Franklin is directly behind the Diamond Building, one of Joburg’s most famous skyscrapers (you can see the tip of the diamond behind the DJ platform), and has fantastic 360-degree views. I’m so glad I went and I even danced for the first time in about 3 years. #discoverjoburg
