Chowing Down, Durban-style

2010-09-16T22:52:33+00:00September 16, 2010|

This Sunday Joe and I are going to Durban, a coastal city in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. I’m excited about going for several reasons, one of which is the food. Durban’s cuisine is heavily [...]

Wildlife

2010-08-29T17:16:01+00:00August 29, 2010|

I’ve been thinking a lot about wildlife this weekend. To most Americans, the term “African wildlife” brings to mind lions and elephants and giraffes. But there is an array of smaller animals that pack every [...]

Yesterday was Sunday and it was warm. Joe and I decided to go hiking. We got a late start (slept late and needed provisions from the store) so we picked Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. It’s 45 [...]

In the ‘Hood

2010-08-21T17:16:43+00:00August 21, 2010|

I've been exploring Melville on my own lately. Yesterday I walked two blocks to 7th Street -- the main strip in Melville. I poked around used book stores and gift shops. I bought handmade earrings and bracelets for next-to-nothing at the bead store. It was a beautiful Friday afternoon and the bars and cafes were getting busy.

Soccer City and Scarves

2010-08-19T14:46:43+00:00August 19, 2010|

Joe is shooting a rugby match at Soccer City this Saturday – South Africa’s reigning world-champion Springboks against the New Zealand All Blacks. It's a rematch of the 1995 Rugby World Cup championship, featured in Invictus. I wanted to go to the match but the tickets (all 94,000 of them) are sold out. So I settled for going to the stadium with Joe yesterday to pick up his media credentials. On our way home from Soccer City we decided to visit the Oriental Plaza – a city-block-sized mall packed with Indian-owned stores. It's a bargain-shopper’s paradise.
