Braamfontein From Above

Braamfontein From Above

by 2summers | Mar 12, 2021 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Museums and Buildings

On Tuesday evening, South Point properties invited me to check out 56 Jorissen Street, a brand-new, high-rise student residence in Braamfontein. The whole building is beautiful — I almost wished I could become an 18-year-old college student again and move in....

Memories From Joburg’s Carlton Hotel

by 2summers | Jan 10, 2020 | Arts and Culture, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Museums and Buildings

The Johannesburg central business district (locals call it the CBD) has experienced tumultuous change over the past 50 years. Nowhere is that change more visible than at the once glitzy, now abandoned Carlton Hotel. The Carlton opened at the height of apartheid in...

Bank of Lisbon: The Implosion of a Jozi SkyScraper

by 2summers | Nov 25, 2019 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Museums and Buildings

Yesterday morning I watched the Bank of Lisbon Building, a 31-storey tower in downtown Joburg, fold inward on itself and collapse to the ground in a cloud of dust. The burned-out shell of the Bank of Lisbon Building stands behind the Joburg City Library at 8:00 a.m....

by 2summers | Jan 13, 2019 | Arts and Culture, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Jozi Top Fives, Museums and Buildings, Parks/Nature Reserves, Religion

I was on a walking tour today, talking to someone about Joburg. It suddenly occurred to me there are so many insanely beautiful places in downtown Joburg that Joburgers either: a) don’t know about because the places are really hidden; or b) are afraid to visit,...

Some Shots From the Top of the Sentech Tower

by 2summers | May 1, 2018 | Brixton, Johannesburg, Melville and Surrounds, Museums and Buildings

Last week I got an incredible opportunity to visit the Sentech Tower, a.k.a. the Brixton Tower. A picture I took a few years ago of the Sentech Tower at sunset. While not as tall as the Hillbrow Tower, which is 269 meters (883 feet) high and the tallest structure in...

Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab sand dunes near Aus, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, at sunrise. Unlike Sossusvlei, a few hours to the north, these dunes are not a frequently visited tourist attraction (I couldn’t even find an Instagram location.) I think we were the only humans within a 30-kilometer radius. It was worth the early wake-up. #namibia
Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horse Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horses, which originally came here with the German military during World War I. Today we visited a hide/viewing point near the horses’ watering hole and I was lucky enough to have an experienced host, Andrew Engelbrecht, who owns a farm in Aus and knows how to approach the horses. Do not try this at home! #wildhorses
I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tr I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tree for about ten years, ever since I saw one from a distance in the Northern Cape and didn’t have time to stop. Yesterday I got to see (and photograph) about 100 of them, in what is possibly the most beautiful and dramatic landscape I’ve ever experienced.
