Registering a Car in South Africa: An Expat’s Epic Journey (Part 1)

by 2summers | Jan 14, 2014 | Johannesburg

Part 1 of a 3-part series. Read part 2. I moved to South Africa in August 2010. In December 2013, I finally bought a car. Cute, right? I love tiny cars. This photo was taken by my former boxing buddy Henrike, who sold me the car when she relocated to Abidjan. Thanks,...

The Car Spa: What Every Jozi Car Needs

by 2summers | Apr 26, 2012 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg Transportation

Life is hard for a Jozi car. Parking spaces are small here. Street lanes are narrow and sometimes unpaved. Potholes are ubiquitous. Road rage rules. Cars share the road with minibus taxis – mighty behemoths with inconsiderate drivers, which hem cars in from all sides....

An American Girl’s Guide to Driving in Johannesburg

by 2summers | Jun 8, 2011 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg Transportation

I put it off for as long as I could. I let my boyfriend chauffeur me everywhere, even though it didn’t feel right. I bought a bicycle. I called taxis. I accepted rides from friends. I walked. Sometimes, when I really wanted to go somewhere, I just stayed home...

by 2summers | Jan 6, 2011 | Johannesburg, Melville and Surrounds, Parks/Nature Reserves

I launched 2Summers about six months ago and I’m nearing 10,000 hits. (If I’m lucky, I might reach 10,000 after publishing this post.) It’s a small feat, I know, but reaching that milestone is a pretty cool thing for a regular person like me. More...

Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab sand dunes near Aus, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, at sunrise. Unlike Sossusvlei, a few hours to the north, these dunes are not a frequently visited tourist attraction (I couldn’t even find an Instagram location.) I think we were the only humans within a 30-kilometer radius. It was worth the early wake-up. #namibia
Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horse Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horses, which originally came here with the German military during World War I. Today we visited a hide/viewing point near the horses’ watering hole and I was lucky enough to have an experienced host, Andrew Engelbrecht, who owns a farm in Aus and knows how to approach the horses. Do not try this at home! #wildhorses
I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tr I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tree for about ten years, ever since I saw one from a distance in the Northern Cape and didn’t have time to stop. Yesterday I got to see (and photograph) about 100 of them, in what is possibly the most beautiful and dramatic landscape I’ve ever experienced.
