Fun Fish Photography at the Two Oceans Aquarium

Fun Fish Photography at the Two Oceans Aquarium

by 2summers | Aug 11, 2015 | Arts and Culture, Cape Town

Visiting an aquarium is one of those touristy activities that I don’t normally seek out. I grew up in Baltimore, home of the National Aquarium, and I think I subconsciously believed that my home aquarium is the best in the world and there is no point in visiting...

Learning to Cook, Faldela’s Way

by 2summers | Jun 30, 2015 | Arts and Culture, Cape Town, Food and Drink, Western Cape

My #HelloWeekend trip to Cape Town was nearly a month ago and I’m woefully behind in writing about it. But I can’t let any more time pass before telling you about my Cape Malay cooking class in the Bo-Kaap. Before I moved to Joburg five years ago, I...

#HelloWeekend: 48 Hours in Cape Town

by 2summers | Jun 10, 2015 | Cape Town, Food and Drink, Joburg Weekend Getaways, Lodging, Markets/Shopping, Parks/Nature Reserves

As most South Africans know, there is an ongoing competition between between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Capetonians believe their city is the best place to live and would never live anywhere else. Joburgers believe the same. This my-city-is-better-than-your-city...

Today I attended a service at St. Nicholas of Japa Today I attended a service at St. Nicholas of Japan, a small orthodox church just around the corner from us in Brixton. It’s a multi-ethnic orthodox church, meaning it combines features from multiple orthodox faiths - Greek, African, Russian, Serbian, Romanian, etc. The church is named for a 19th-century Russian priest, Father Nicholas, who spent most of his life building the church in Japan.

St. Nicholas has an incredibly diverse, laid-back congregation and a wonderful a cappella choir. Going there reminded me why I love South Africa and made me momentarily forget the world’s woes. Thanks to Father Elias, Georgia, Alice, and everyone else who made me feel welcome. I will blog about this eventually! #discoverjoburg

Yesterday I visited @tweakfashion, an NPO in Modde Yesterday I visited @tweakfashion, an NPO in Modderfontein that takes second-hand clothes and discarded fabrics and upcycles them into new clothing, toys, and other gifts. It’s an all-woman operation and most of the women working there did not know how to sew when the first started at Tweak last year. It’s a really special space, in a complex of neat, red brick buildings that once served as dormitories for the dynamite factory workers in Modderfontein.

Thanks Justine, Dee, Helen, Grace, Rosa, Jenny, and Zinhle for showing me your workshop and telling me about what you do. I’m sure I’ll be back! #discoverjoburg
