by 2summers | Oct 6, 2020 | Ekurhuleni (East Rand), Johannesburg, Johannesburg Day Trips, Tours, Townships/Informal Settlements

On Saturday I participated in the first-ever #SpazaShopTour, starting and ending at African Accent Spaza Shop in Katlehong. Walking through Katlehong. The weather was miraculously perfect for a six-kilometer walk. We wound through Katlehong and Thokoza, visiting spaza...

Announcing the Katlehong and Thokoza Spaza Shop Tour

by 2summers | Sep 22, 2020 | Arts and Culture, Ekurhuleni (East Rand), Johannesburg, Tours, Townships/Informal Settlements

Many of you may remember my post about the African Accent Spaza Shop in Katlehong, which I visited for the first time in June. My first time at the African Accent Spaza Shop. (Photo: Nkosikhona Kumalo) I’ve kept going back, for various reasons. Every time I go I...

Thoughts About Racism, Anti-Racism, and White Supremacy (Lockdown Day 66)

by 2summers | May 31, 2020 | BlackLivesMatter, COVID-19, Emotions

It’s Day 66 of the South African lockdown. I don’t normally blog on weekends and today I was supposed to work on another task. But I’ve decided to do that task tomorrow and blog today, because I can’t stop thinking about racism and white...

by 2summers | Feb 20, 2020 | #10SouthAfricanTowns, Lodging, North West

Kameel is the second stop in my  #10SouthAfricanTowns campaign, for which I’m visiting ten small towns across South Africa in 2020. Kameel means “Camel” in Afrikaans. The original farm there is called “Kameel Bult”, which roughly means...

Val is the first stop in my #10SouthAfricanTowns campaign, for which I’m visiting ten small towns across South Africa in 2020. After months of talking about it, my #10SouthAfricanTowns campaign has finally begun. I visited Val, a tiny hamlet in Mpumalanga...

Today I attended a service at St. Nicholas of Japa Today I attended a service at St. Nicholas of Japan, a small orthodox church just around the corner from us in Brixton. It’s a multi-ethnic orthodox church, meaning it combines features from multiple orthodox faiths - Greek, African, Russian, Serbian, Romanian, etc. The church is named for a 19th-century Russian priest, Father Nicholas, who spent most of his life building the church in Japan.

St. Nicholas has an incredibly diverse, laid-back congregation and a wonderful a cappella choir. Going there reminded me why I love South Africa and made me momentarily forget the world’s woes. Thanks to Father Elias, Georgia, Alice, and everyone else who made me feel welcome. I will blog about this eventually! #discoverjoburg

Yesterday I visited @tweakfashion, an NPO in Modde Yesterday I visited @tweakfashion, an NPO in Modderfontein that takes second-hand clothes and discarded fabrics and upcycles them into new clothing, toys, and other gifts. It’s an all-woman operation and most of the women working there did not know how to sew when the first started at Tweak last year. It’s a really special space, in a complex of neat, red brick buildings that once served as dormitories for the dynamite factory workers in Modderfontein.

Thanks Justine, Dee, Helen, Grace, Rosa, Jenny, and Zinhle for showing me your workshop and telling me about what you do. I’m sure I’ll be back! #discoverjoburg
