September Restaurant of the Month: Lexi’s Healthy Eatery

by 2summers | Sep 28, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month, Sandton and Surrounds

Halfway through my recent book club meeting, I felt compelled to interrupt the robust literary conversation with an important statement and follow-up question. “These salads are amazing!” I exclaimed to Cingashe, the host. “Where are they...

August Restaurant of the Month: Ben’s Pizza in Marshalltown

by 2summers | Aug 20, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Restaurant of the Month

There’s a brick oven pizza restaurant in downtown Joburg and it’s open on Saturdays. It’s called Ben’s Pizza and it’s delicious. Ben’s Pizza. Really, this is all you need to know. It’s not easy to find decent restaurants in...

July Restaurant of the Month: NGC Blairgowrie

by 2summers | Jul 27, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month

NGC is not what you’d expect to find at the busy intersection of Barkston and Conrad Drive in Blairgowrie. There’s a tire store across the road and a lawnmower repair shop next door, and it just doesn’t feel like the right place for a classy...

June Restaurant of the Month: Sumting Fresh

by 2summers | Jun 14, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month

I can describe Sumting Fresh in one (not so) simple word: South-African-Asian-American-fried-chicken-street-food. Sumting Fresh, on Grant Avenue in Norwood. Inside Sumting Fresh. Really though, Sumting Fresh is hard to explain. It was once a food trailer in Midrand,...

May Restaurant of the Month: Tonino’s

by 2summers | May 18, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month

Tonino’s has been on my hit list forever. Tonino’s: Is it a sports pub? A blues venue? A casino? A Portuguese restaurant? A pizza take-away? Yes. All of that. I first noticed Tonino’s a few years ago during a visit to the fabulous Kalahari Books,...

Eek! I have so many photos from Sunday’s Pretori Eek! I have so many photos from Sunday’s Pretoria jacaranda walk and I’m agonizing over which ones to share first. Many more to come. @johannesburginyourpocket #jacarandainyourpocket #pretoriajacarandas2023 @thegautrain #yourgautrainjourneystartshere
For anyone who hasn’t seen, I’m hosting a jaca For anyone who hasn’t seen, I’m hosting a jacaranda walk in Kensington on 28 Oct. as part of the @johannesburginyourpocket annual #jacarandainyourpocket event series. I’m super excited about hosting a jacaranda walk in one of my favorite quirky Joburg neighborhoods.

The walk starts at 2pm at @kensington_trading, one of Joburg’s iconic antique/vintage shops, and passes a few other Kensington landmarks before winding its way up through the suburb’s best jacaranda streets. We’ll finish in the late afternoon at @fishbird_artdeco_villa — a beautiful Art Deco guesthouse with glorious skyline views and a stately jacaranda of its own. Drinks and snacks will be served at the villa.

I’ll be giving out some jacaranda photography tips, and the walk is a perfect opportunity to capture shots for the #jacarandainyourpocket photo competition. Visit @johannesburginyourpocket to book tickets for the walk and learn more about the photo competition. Hope to see you there!

I hadn’t been to dinner at the @yeovilledinnercl I hadn’t been to dinner at the @yeovilledinnerclub for years and I’d forgotten what a culinary genius Sanza Sandile is. He has a special talent for combining pan-African ingredients and flavors — most of which are available in his neighborhood at the Yeoville food market — into delicious, one-of-a-kind dishes. A couple of my favorites were the ‘Nat King Cole slaw’ made with beetroot and Israeli couscous, a take on Nigerian egusi with melon and pumpkin seeds and palm oil, the roasted red snapper, an incredible crispy okra dish, beer-battered amagwinya, and the poached pear dessert with black rice and amasi. Plus there are cute kittens and great Joburg stories from Sanza. If you’re into food and unique experiences, this meal is worth the trek out of your comfort zone - there’s nothing else like it. If you want to learn more about the Yeoville Dinner Club, go to my blog (www.2summers.net) and type it into the search bar. #yeovilledinnerclub #discoverjoburg #2summerseats #food #africanfood

As I toil over my blog post about the @brixtonligh As I toil over my blog post about the @brixtonlightfestival, I’m realizing there were so many amazing moments that can’t be easily described or represented in photos. So here is a reel featuring some videos of moments that won’t appear on the blog (as well as several moments that will). I was super excited to find one of the songs that @bonjglobal actually performed at the festival to accompany this reel! Blog post to come later tonight or tomorrow 🔥🌊💫 UPDATE: Blog post is up! I’m still thinking about our weekend in the Vred I’m still thinking about our weekend in the Vredefort Dome, and how much fun it was, and how much I wish more people in Joburg would take advantage of this amazing (and educational) weekend getaway opportunity. A few shots from our weekend in the Vredefort Dome A few shots from our weekend in the Vredefort Dome: a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is only an hour-and-a-half from Joburg. This was such a cool trip and I want everyone in Joburg to do it! Check out my blog post (link in profile) for everything you need to know to visit.
This weekend @thethinking_hand and I visited the V This weekend @thethinking_hand and I visited the Vredefort Dome UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the site of a 2 billion (yes, billion with a B) year-old meteorite impact crater - the largest documented impact site on earth. I was blown away (pardon the pun) by this place, which I’ve known about for years but somehow never visited before, despite it being only an hour and a half from Joburg. I’ll have a lot more to say about it in future posts but in the meantime here is a photo of Thorsten - or is it Indiana Jones? - exploring a century-old goldmining tunnel we checked out during a hike in the Vredefort heritage area. #vredefortdome #southafrica
