September Restaurant of the Month: Lexi’s Healthy Eatery

September Restaurant of the Month: Lexi’s Healthy Eatery

by 2summers | Sep 28, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month, Sandton and Surrounds

Halfway through my recent book club meeting, I felt compelled to interrupt the robust literary conversation with an important statement and follow-up question. “These salads are amazing!” I exclaimed to Cingashe, the host. “Where are they...

August Restaurant of the Month: Ben’s Pizza in Marshalltown

by 2summers | Aug 20, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Johannesburg City Centre, Restaurant of the Month

There’s a brick oven pizza restaurant in downtown Joburg and it’s open on Saturdays. It’s called Ben’s Pizza and it’s delicious. Ben’s Pizza. Really, this is all you need to know. It’s not easy to find decent restaurants in...
July Restaurant of the Month: NGC Blairgowrie

July Restaurant of the Month: NGC Blairgowrie

by 2summers | Jul 27, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month

NGC is not what you’d expect to find at the busy intersection of Barkston and Conrad Drive in Blairgowrie. There’s a tire store across the road and a lawnmower repair shop next door, and it just doesn’t feel like the right place for a classy...
June Restaurant of the Month: Sumting Fresh

June Restaurant of the Month: Sumting Fresh

by 2summers | Jun 14, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month

I can describe Sumting Fresh in one (not so) simple word: South-African-Asian-American-fried-chicken-street-food. Sumting Fresh, on Grant Avenue in Norwood. Inside Sumting Fresh. Really though, Sumting Fresh is hard to explain. It was once a food trailer in Midrand,...
May Restaurant of the Month: Tonino’s

May Restaurant of the Month: Tonino’s

by 2summers | May 18, 2018 | Food and Drink, Johannesburg, Restaurant of the Month

Tonino’s has been on my hit list forever. Tonino’s: Is it a sports pub? A blues venue? A casino? A Portuguese restaurant? A pizza take-away? Yes. All of that. I first noticed Tonino’s a few years ago during a visit to the fabulous Kalahari Books,...

Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab Today we got up at 4:30 a.m. to visit the Khoichab sand dunes near Aus, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, at sunrise. Unlike Sossusvlei, a few hours to the north, these dunes are not a frequently visited tourist attraction (I couldn’t even find an Instagram location.) I think we were the only humans within a 30-kilometer radius. It was worth the early wake-up. #namibia
Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horse Aus, Namibia, is famous for its herd of wild horses, which originally came here with the German military during World War I. Today we visited a hide/viewing point near the horses’ watering hole and I was lucky enough to have an experienced host, Andrew Engelbrecht, who owns a farm in Aus and knows how to approach the horses. Do not try this at home! #wildhorses
I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tr I’ve been wanting to see a quiver (kokerboom) tree for about ten years, ever since I saw one from a distance in the Northern Cape and didn’t have time to stop. Yesterday I got to see (and photograph) about 100 of them, in what is possibly the most beautiful and dramatic landscape I’ve ever experienced.
